It is time we SPREAD THE WORD TO END THE WORD!
March 31, 2009 is a national day of awareness for America to stop and think about their use of the R-word. That R-word is not “recession,” but something more hurtful and painful – “retard.” Most people don’t think of this word as hate speech, but that’s exactly what it feels like to millions of people with intellectual disabilities, their families and their friends.
This word is just as cruel and offensive as any other slur.

Luke has an intellectual disability which in past years was called mentally retarded. Our family has a good attitude about it but it doesn't make it any less hurtful when "retarded" is thrown around as a derogatory term. Personally I see nothing derogatory about Luke. He is a special blessing sent to us. Hopefully to all of our friends and family who read our blog you will be more aware of the way you use the "r-word". Thank you!

O.K. I've got tears in my eyes just reading this. We love Luke so much! And the only R word I can think of to describe him is RAD!
Thanks for spreading the awareness! You guys are awesome parents and the best Luke could have.
We agree with you and Tirsa. Luke is really, really rad and we love him. The r-word should never be used.
OK. I heard the r word used today and it made me laugh, but that is a phone conversation for you and I. It was used in a good way and you would laugh too. so call! I totally agree with you and love Luke to pieces!
